Abstract

This study examines the principles of Islamic economics as reflected in selected Qur’anic verses, particularly QS. Al-Baqarah 275–279, 282, and 188, and their relevance to contemporary economic practices. The study aims to explore the Qur’anic foundations of Islamic economic principles, including the prohibition of usury (riba), transparency in financial transactions, the prohibition of acquiring wealth through unlawful means, and the realization of economic justice and public welfare. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research. Data were obtained from the Qur’an, classical and contemporary Qur’anic commentaries, hadith, books, scholarly journals, and other relevant literature. A thematic (maudhu’i) approach was applied to analyze verses concerning Islamic economics, while content analysis was used to identify, classify, and interpret their meanings and relevance to contemporary economic practices. The findings indicate that the selected verses establish fundamental principles of Islamic economics based on justice, honesty, transparency, accountability, and the protection of wealth. The prohibition of riba is closely connected with the objectives of maqashid al-shariah, particularly the protection of wealth (hifz al-mal) and the prevention of exploitation and economic injustice. These principles remain relevant to contemporary Islamic banking, Islamic fintech, zakat, and other Sharia-based economic activities. Thus, the Qur’anic principles of Islamic economics provide a normative and ethical foundation for developing an economic system oriented toward justice, welfare, and public benefit.

The principles of Islamic economics are contained in several verses of the Qur'an, namely QS. Al-Baqarah verses 275–279 on the prohibition of usury, QS. Al-Baqarah verse 282 on the recording of debt transactions, QS. An-Nisa verse 29 on the principle of willingness (an-tarāḍin) in transactions, QS. Al-Hasyr verse 7 on the distribution of wealth, and QS. Al-Baqarah verse 188 on the prohibition of consuming wealth in a wrongful manner. This study aims to understand the meaning, interpretation, asbabun nuzul, and implementation of these verses in modern economic life. The method used is library research by analyzing various classical and contemporary interpretations and Islamic economic literature. The results of the study show that Islamic economics emphasizes the principles of justice, honesty, transparency, responsibility, and welfare in every economic activity. These values are implemented through the Islamic banking system, Islamic fintech, zakat management, and various economic instruments free from riba (usury), gharar (gharar), and maisir (gambling). Thus, Islamic economic principles remain relevant in addressing contemporary economic challenges and play a role in realizing a just, sustainable, and welfare-oriented economic system.
