Abstract

This research examines the influence of understanding Maqashid Syariah on the consumerist behavior of PIPS students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. In the modern era, the rise of consumerism, especially among young people such as university students, poses a significant challenge, with many students trapped in patterns of excessive consumption driven by social media, peer pressure, and advertising. Islam strongly condemns such behavior, referred to as israf (wastefulness) and tabdzir (unnecessary spending), as it contradicts the principles of Maqashid Syariah. The study uses a quantitative approach, employing simple linear regression to analyze the relationship between students' understanding of Maqashid Syariah and their consumerist tendencies. The research involved 118 PIPS students at UIN Malang, with a randomly selected sample of 54 students. The results show a significant relationship between understanding Maqashid Syariah and consumption behavior, indicating that a deeper understanding of Maqashid Syariah, which advocates for moderation and balance, helps students differentiate between needs and desires and promotes more thoughtful and responsible consumption. However, the implementation of this understanding is still suboptimal. The study concludes that educational programs on the principles of Maqashid Syariah are essential for shaping responsible consumption behavior among students.
