Abstract

This article explores the historical significance and proselytization strategies of Sunan Bonang, a central figure in the spread of Islam in Java during the 15th century. Also known as Raden Makdum Ibrahim, Sunan Bonang is renowned for his innovative use of cultural assimilation in preaching. He incorporated traditional Javanese art forms, such as gamelan music and wayang performances, as tools to introduce Islamic teachings. Through these media, he communicated the values of Islam in a manner that was both accessible and appealing to the local population. Sunan Bonang's approach emphasized harmony and mutual respect, allowing Islam to be accepted organically without coercion. By embedding Islamic messages in poetic compositions and artistic expressions, he bridged the gap between religious teachings and Javanese cultural practices. His efforts not only facilitated the spread of Islam but also fostered a peaceful coexistence with existing traditions. This study examines the strategies used by Sunan Bonang, their impact on Javanese society, and their enduring relevance in promoting interfaith understanding and peaceful values. It also aims to inspire younger generations to adopt creative and inclusive approaches in spreading positive messages.
