National identity serves as a fundamental foundation for building collective awareness and strengthening a nation’s unity. Amid the waves of globalization, which bring new values and foreign cultural influences, national identity faces significant challenges that may weaken a nation's sense of self. Globalization impacts not only economic and technological aspects but also culture and values, potentially affecting a country’s social system and ideology. In this context, national identity is no longer static but continuously evolves through the interaction between local and global values. This article discusses the critical importance of preserving and reinforcing national identity in the fast-paced and widespread era of globalization. The study employs a qualitative approach through literature review, examining various academic sources and policies related to national identity, citizenship, and the cultural effects of globalization. The main focus includes a conceptual understanding of national identity, globalization’s influence on national character, and concrete strategies that governments, educational institutions, media, and the broader society can adopt to strengthen national values. The findings highlight that character education based on Pancasila, reinforcing nationalist narratives in the media, preserving local cultures, and fostering synergy among stakeholders are crucial steps to safeguard the persistence of national identity. Therefore, all elements of the nation must collectively recognize that national identity serves as the ultimate shield to maintain Indonesia’s unity and sovereignty amid increasingly complex global competition.
