Abstract

This study explores the relationship between the construction of state identity and political legitimacy across different systems of governance using a cross-national comparative approach. State identity is understood as a political construct employed to foster social cohesion and establish the foundation of state authority. In democratic regimes, identity is typically formed inclusively to accommodate diversity, thereby enhancing citizen participation and trust in state institutions. In contrast, authoritarian regimes often construct identity in an exclusive manner to maintain power, which can result in social exclusion and conflict. By analyzing cases such as Canada, China, and Indonesia, this study reveals that a state's ability to develop a fair and adaptive national identity significantly influences its political legitimacy and stability. The findings highlight the importance of inclusive identity frameworks in managing diversity and strengthening political foundations in an increasingly globalized world.
