This study examines the reflection of social and political criticism in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's novel Arok Dedes through Hippolyte Taine's sociological approach to literature. The novel presents issues such as power struggles, political legitimacy, feudalism, social inequality, patriarchal culture, and corruption of power. The analysis was conducted by linking the elements of race, milieu, and moment offered by Taine to read cultural representations, social conditions, and historical influences in the text. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with reading and note-taking techniques as well as Miles & Huberman's data analysis model. The results show that the novel Arok Dedes not only presents the history of Ancient Java, but also serves as a medium for social criticism that reflects the political conditions in Indonesia during the New Order era. Thus, this work remains relevant for understanding patterns of power and social injustice in contemporary society.
