Hubungan Self-Esteem dengan Kecemasan Sosial pada Mahasiswa Baru di Ma’had UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang
Abstract
This study aims to explore the relationship between self-esteem and social anxiety among first-year students residing in the Ma’had of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The Ma’had environment requires students to adapt academically, socially, and spiritually, which may lead to the emergence of social anxiety, particularly among those with low self-esteem. A quantitative correlational approach was employed with first-year students as participants. The instruments consisted of a self-esteem scale and a social anxiety scale that were adapted to the research context. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment correlation to examine the relationship between variables. The results indicate a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and social anxiety. Higher self-esteem was associated with lower levels of social anxiety, and vice versa. These findings underscore the importance of fostering positive self-esteem as a protective factor against social anxiety, especially for first-year students undergoing adaptation in the Ma’had environment. This study is expected to contribute to the development of psychological and social support programs for new students at the university.
