The The Influence of Translation on the Meaning of Literary Works
Abstract
Translating literary works is not merely transferring words from the source language to the target language but also involves conveying meaning, cultural values, and social context. Differences in language systems, cultural nuances, and the translator's ideology often lead to shifts in meaning that impact the reader's experience. This article discusses the impact of translation on the interpretation of literary works using translation theory approaches (Nida, Newmark, Venuti) and cultural sociolinguistics. The analysis focuses on several world literary works such as To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee), The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald), and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (J. K. Rowling), as well as Indonesian works like Saman (Ayu Utami) translated into English. The study reveals that translation can broaden the reach of a work but also has the potential to alter the aesthetic nuances and ideology of the text. This article emphasizes the importance of critical awareness in understanding translated literary works so that readers not only enjoy the story but also recognize the possibility of shifts in meaning.
