Culture shock santri luar Jawa terhadap komunikasi nonverbal (bentuk ta’dhim) di pesantren Jawa

This study discusses the phenomenon of culture shock experienced by students from outside Java when encountering the traditional nonverbal communication of ta'dhim in Javanese Islamic boarding schools. Islamic boarding schools, as institutions of Islamic education, are not only places of religious learning, but also socio-cultural spaces that preserve the tradition of respect for teachers (kyai) from generation to generation. This ta'dhim tradition is manifested in various forms of nonverbal communication, such as bowing the head, squatting, not looking at the teacher's face, and other unique traditions that are considered expressions of politeness and humility. However, non-Javanese santri often experience culture shock because these forms of respect differ from their own culture, causing them to feel alienated, awkward, and confused in adjusting to their new environment. The study used a qualitative approach with unstructured interviews with non-Javanese santri studying at Javanese-based Islamic boarding schools, as well as an analysis of related literature. The results show that santri experience five phases of culture shock, ranging from initial euphoria to selective adjustment and understanding of traditions that are considered excessive. They try to balance local values with humanitarian and religious principles according to their respective perspectives. This study emphasizes the importance of cultural adaptation that involves a process of value reflection in multicultural pesantren life.
