Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed human interaction patterns, particularly through social media use. One of the emerging negative effects is the phenomenon of doomscrolling and social media fatigue, characterized by a compulsive tendency to consume negative content continuously, leading to emotional exhaustion and psychological distress. This study aims to examine the impact of doomscrolling and social media fatigue on anxiety and depression levels, especially among university students as active social media users. The method employed is a literature review based on six national and international scholarly journals published between 2023 and 2025. The findings indicate that high social media usage intensity is strongly associated with increased anxiety, stress, and mild depressive symptoms. Factors such as fear of missing out (FOMO), the need for social validation, and repeated exposure to negative news are identified as the main psychological triggers. Therefore, digital literacy, screen time management, and psychological support from educational institutions are essential to prevent the long-term mental health consequences of excessive social media use.
