This study examines the representation of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and religious leaders (kiai) in Trans7’s program Xpose Uncensored, which portrays pesantren problematically. Television, as a mass medium, plays a vital role in shaping public perception of religious institutions. The program depicts pesantren as mysterious spaces and kiai as mystical figures. This study uses a qualitative approach with (Van Dijk, 1998) critical discourse analysis and Stuart Hall’s representation theory. Data were collected through online observation and interviews with 30 respondents comprising students, university learners, and the general public. The findings show that Xpose Uncensored constructs biased visual and narrative representations through dark imagery, dramatic narration, and mystical sound effects. Such depictions shift pesantren’s meaning from educational institutions to exotic entities. This research underscores the need for media literacy and broadcasting ethics to prevent distortion of religious values on television.
