Abstract

This article examines the Sufi thought of Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani and his contributions to the development of Islamic scholarship in the Nusantara region and the broader Islamic world. Syekh Nawawi, a distinguished scholar from Banten, is recognized as one of the imams of the Grand Mosque (Masjid Al-Haram) and a prolific author with more than one hundred works spanning jurisprudence, Qur’anic exegesis, Sufism, and Islamic education. This study employs library research and content analysis of Syekh Nawawi’s works and related literature. The findings reveal that his concept of Sufism emphasizes the integration of Sharia and Haqiqah as a path toward holistic religious perfection, highlighting the balance between physical, intellectual, and spiritual aspects. This concept is reflected in the nine maqamat that a salik must undertake, encompassing not only spiritual devotion but also moral discipline, personal responsibility, and practical efforts in social life. Syekh Nawawi’s practical Sufism remains relevant in addressing contemporary moral decline by repositioning Sufism as a transformative approach to character development, rather than solely a spiritual ritual. His ideas offer a constructive framework for shaping a balanced and responsible Muslim identity in the modern era.
