Cultural diversity and religious pluralism in Indonesia are both a source of potential and a challenge to the development of civilization, easily triggering social conflict. This article develops a comprehensive strategy to strengthen tolerance and societal harmony by analyzing three key pillars derived from the study of Islam Nusantara. The first pillar is an analysis of Islamic Universalism Thought, primarily initiated by Nurcholish Madjid, which aligns with the principles of Multicultural Education (respecting diversity, justice, and equal rights). This inclusive understanding is then expanded through a multi-perspective approach, which combines theological, sociological, and psychological analysis of the dynamics of religious pluralism, thus producing a comprehensive perspective. The third pillar encompasses the application of the Ethics of Diversity in a social context. This can be seen in the history of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Walisongo (Nahdlatul Ulama) in the Indonesian archipelago, who successfully addressed differences through dialogue between religion and culture. The success of this model lies in the integration of religion and culture, as well as the realization of three types of piety (ritual, social, and cultural) to form a society that is baldatun tayyibah (a just society). In conclusion, Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays a crucial role in instilling this awareness. PAI needs to implement innovative and contextually appropriate learning methods to spread the values of tolerance, empathy, and respect to prevent disintegration and strengthen unity within a diverse framework.
