Sweet heritage: transformasi kayu secang dalam bentuk permen untuk mendorong adopsi fitoterapi pada generasi z
Abstract
Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) is a traditional Indonesian herbal plant containing bioactive compounds such as brazilin, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins that function as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and immunomodulators. Despite its well-documented health benefits, interest in consuming secang wood among Generation Z has declined due to its bitter taste, inconvenient preparation process, and traditional image perceived as outdated. This article aims to examine the transformation of secang wood into herbal candy as an innovative strategy to modernize phytotherapy and increase consumption interest among Generation Z. This study employs a literature review method by analyzing scientific publications related to phytochemical properties of secang wood, functional food innovation, phytotherapy, and consumer behavior theories. The findings indicate that herbal candy can serve as an effective delivery system for bioactive compounds, improving sensory acceptance, convenience, and compliance without reducing functional benefits. Furthermore, the transformation aligns with behavioral theories such as the Theory of Planned Behavior and Health Belief Model, which emphasize perceived benefits, reduced barriers, and lifestyle compatibility. In conclusion, transforming secang wood into herbal candy represents a promising approach to revitalizing traditional herbal medicine through functional food innovation tailored to modern consumer preferences.
