Art Therapy, Mental Health, Creative Expression, Islamic Perspective, Emotional RegulationAbstract
This article examines art therapy as a psychological approach that utilizes creative artistic processes to support emotional expression, self-understanding, and psychological healing. Using a library research method, the paper explores the historical development of art therapy—from its psychoanalytic foundations to its modern applications involving digital tools, telehealth, and evidence-based interventions across diverse populations. Art therapy is described through its various models and techniques, including drawing, painting, collage, clay work, and mandala art, each adapted to individual or group needs. Its strengths lie in enabling non-verbal emotional expression, offering flexible application in clinical and educational settings, and demonstrating effectiveness in reducing stress, anxiety, depression, and enhancing psychological well-being. The article also integrates an Islamic perspective, highlighting that art in Islam serves as a medium for spiritual reflection, emotional balance, and purification of the soul, while adhering to syariah principles. Islamic art forms such as calligraphy and geometric patterns are recognized for their therapeutic value in promoting calmness and strengthening an individual’s spiritual connection with Allah. Overall, this study emphasizes art therapy as a multidimensional and culturally relevant approach that contributes to emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being.
