Wujud kebudayan dalam bentuk tradisi rimpu: studi tentang makna dan fungsi dalam masyarakat bima
Abstract
Rimpu culture is a distinctive cultural heritage of the Bima community in West Nusa Tenggara that has been passed down through generations and continues to survive amid globalization. Rimpu is a traditional woven sarong worn by Bima women to cover the head and body, functioning not only as clothing but also as a reflection of social, spiritual, and aesthetic values as well as gender and cultural identity. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through literature review, personal experiences, field observations, and interviews with community members in Tarlawi Village. The findings show that rimpu has strong historical roots dating back to the arrival of Islam in Bima in the seventeenth century and has undergone acculturation with local customary values. There are two main types of rimpu, namely rimpu mpida, worn by unmarried women, and rimpu colo, worn by married women, which differ in their manner of use and social meaning. In addition, rimpu contributes to strengthening the local economy through the production and marketing of woven fabrics by female artisans. However, modernization, declining interest among younger generations, and limited government support pose significant challenges to its preservation, which is currently pursued through cultural festivals, local value education, and supportive policies from local governments.
