Abstract

Environmental pollution has become one of the most pressing challenges facing Indonesia in the 21st century, affecting air quality, water resources, and terrestrial ecosystems. This article examines the current state of environmental pollution in Indonesia through an integrated perspective that combines scientific analysis with Islamic values. The study utilized literature review methodology to analyze data from government agencies, academic research, and Islamic jurisprudence sources. Results reveal that more than 80% of Indonesian rivers experience contamination, with 2% of monitoring sites heavily polluted, while air pollution in metropolitan areas such as Jakarta exceeds national standards by more than double. The primary sources of pollution include industrial waste, domestic waste, and agricultural runoff. From an Islamic perspective, environmental pollution contradicts the principle of hifz al-bi'ah (environmental protection) as part of maqashid al-shariah and the responsibility of khalifah fil ardh (stewardship of the Earth). This research recommends integrated management approaches that combine modern environmental engineering solutions with Islamic principles of environmental ethics, emphasizing community participation, strict regulatory enforcement, and spiritual awareness among Muslims regarding their divine mandate to protect creation.
