The rapid growth of social media has led to the emergence of fear of missing out (FoMO) among university students, characterized by the fear of missing information and social experiences. This condition encourages constant social media engagement and social comparison, which may increase anxiety. This study aims to examine the role of FoMO in student anxiety through a literature review of relevant studies. The findings indicate that FoMO contributes to increased anxiety through social comparison, the need for social validation, and excessive social media use. These effects influence not only mental health but also students’ academic and social lives. Therefore, effective social media management and emotional regulation are needed to maintain students’ psychological well-being. This study concludes that FoMO is an important psychological factor contributing to student anxiety in the social media era.
