Abstract

Islamic boarding schools, as the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, continue to undergo dynamic changes in line with the demands of modernization in education management. These changes require adaptive leadership without losing the traditional values of Islamic boarding schools. Kyai, as central figures in Islamic boarding schools, play a strategic role in determining policy direction,institutional management, and strengthening organizational culture. This study focuses on examining the role of Kyai leadership in managing Islamic boarding schools amid the demands of modernization of Islamic education management. This study was conducted at the Tarbiyatut Tholabah Kranji Islamic Boarding School, Paciran, Lamongan. This study used a qualitative approach through a case study design.Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation.Research informants included Kyai, pesantren administrators, heads of educational institutions, and educators. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that Kyai leadership plays an important role in formulating the vision of the pesantren, making strategic decisions, strengthening institutional management, and integrating Islamic values with modern management principles. The charismatic and collective leadership of the Kyai has proven to be capable ofmaintaining the sustainability of pesantren traditions while improving the effectiveness of educational governance. This study is expected to contribute theoretically and practically to the development of Islamic education management,particularly in themanagement of pesantren in the contemporary era.
