The Humanitarian and Ecological Perspectives in the “UN Statement on Floods in Asia”

The devastating floods that struck Asia in December 2025, affecting regions including Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, resulted in significant humanitarian losses and prompted the United Nations to issue an official statement addressing the situation. This study aims to analyze the humanitarian and ecological discourses embedded in the UN statement using a qualitative approach through discourse analysis. The primary data consist of the Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General – on floods in Asia, examined to uncover linguistic constructions that represent human–environment relations and global solidarity. The findings indicate that the UN statement emphasizes empathy, condolences, and international solidarity, while simultaneously presenting an ecological narrative that frames the disaster within broader environmental instability. These results demonstrate that the UN constructs a discourse that blends humanitarian and ecological perspectives, aligning with the principles of ecological humanism. This study contributes to expanding disaster communication scholarship, particularly in understanding institutional discourse at the global level, and offers insight into how international organizations use language to frame ecological crises in the context of climate change.
