This article discusses the contribution of Al-Jahiz as a pioneer of the science of balaghah through his monumental work al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin. The study aims to explain Al-Jahiz’s role in establishing balaghah as an independent discipline and to describe the influence of his thought on the development of Arabic language and literature. The method used is library research with a descriptive-qualitative approach and historical perspective. Data were collected from various primary and secondary sources related to the biography of Al-Jahiz, his works, and the historical development of balaghah. The findings show that before the Abbasid era, balaghah was already known in the Arab tradition of poetry, speeches, and prose, yet it had not been systematically organized as an independent branch of knowledge. Through al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin, Al-Jahiz formulated linguistic concepts covering the aspects of al-bayan, al-ma‘ani, and al-badi‘ using rational and empirical approaches supported by real examples from Arab society. The work also presents systematic analyses of dialects, rhetoric, and the aesthetics of the Arabic language. Al-Jahiz’s ideas greatly influenced later scholars such as Ibn Qutaybah, al-Mas‘udi, and al-Jurjani. Until today, al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin remains an important reference in the study of balaghah, Arabic linguistics, and classical literature. Therefore, Al-Jahiz deserves to be recognized as a central figure in the history of balaghah.
