Abstract

The accumulation of plastic waste in educational environments is an ecological problem that requires community-based solutions. This study aims to describe the contribution of santri (Islamic boarding school students) in creating a clean and aesthetically pleasing environment through an ecobrick program at Pondok Pesantren Ribathul Qur'an wal Qiro'at. The program was implemented within the framework of the Community Service Program (KKM), involving santri directly in all stages: socialization, plastic waste collection and sorting, cleaning, drying, compacting into used bottles, and utilizing ecobricks as the pesantren's name marker. The results demonstrate that this community-based approach successfully reduced plastic waste accumulation in the pesantren environment while producing functional and aesthetic physical facilities. Active participation of santri in every stage cultivated values of mutual cooperation, responsibility, and environmental awareness as an internalization of the khalifah fil ardh concept. The use of ecobricks as a visual identity marker provided layered added value: functional, aesthetic, and symbolic through a growing sense of belonging among the santri. This program demonstrates that collaboration between university students, santri, and the pesantren institution can produce tangible solutions to environmental problems without requiring expensive technology, making it a replicable model for other pesantren facing similar challenges.
