Wa’d al-banat masa arab pra islam dan relevansinya dengan isu kesetaraan gender kontemporer
Keywords:

The practice of wa’d al-banat in pre-Islamic Arabia was an extremely severe form of gender discrimination, in which baby girls were buried alive because they were considered to have no value. This reflects how strong the societal mindset at that time was in degrading women. This study aims to examine the historical background of this practice and explore its relationship with contemporary gender equality issues. The method used is qualitative research with a library study approach, by analyzing various sources such as books, journals, and religious texts related to this topic. The results of the study show that Islam brought significant changes by abolishing harmful practices against women and granting them more just rights in social, legal, and spiritual aspects. However, injustice toward women has not completely disappeared. Today, it has transformed into more complex forms, such as physical violence, sexual harassment, degrading remarks, cyberbullying, and the double burden in both domestic and professional life. This indicates that the mindset that demeans women still exists, even if it is not always directly visible. In this context, gender equality in Islam should not only be understood as a theoretical concept, but also as a framework to analyze and criticize ongoing injustices. Therefore, the understanding of religious teachings needs to be continuously adapted to current conditions to remain relevant. In this way, the values of justice in Islam can be truly applied in everyday life and can address the various challenges faced by women today.
