Tolerance among students in the age of social media

The development of social media in the digital era has significantly influenced students’ lives, particularly in the ways they communicate, interact, and express opinions. Social media functions not only as a platform for entertainment and information exchange, but also as a social space that connects individuals from diverse cultural, religious, ethnic, and ideological backgrounds. In this context, tolerance becomes an essential value that students must possess in order to maintain harmonious relationships and mutual respect. However, the use of social media also frequently leads to various forms of intolerant behavior, such as hate speech, cyberbullying, the spread of misinformation, discrimination, and conflicts arising from differences in opinion.
This study aims to examine the importance of tolerance among students in the era of social media, to analyze the influence of social media on students’ attitudes toward tolerance, and to identify efforts that can be made to maintain tolerant behavior in digital life. The method used is a descriptive approach through literature study by collecting information from books, journals, articles, and news sources related to tolerance and social media.
The results indicate that social media has both positive and negative impacts on students’ tolerance attitudes. The positive impacts include broader understanding of diversity, easier interaction with people from different backgrounds, and the development of mutual respect through digital communication. On the other hand, negative impacts appear in the form of provocative behavior, negative comments, and low ethical awareness in the use of social media. Therefore, awareness, character education, and the implementation of Pancasila values are necessary to encourage students to use social media wisely while upholding tolerance.
In conclusion, tolerance among students in the social media era plays an important role in maintaining national unity, creating a healthy digital environment, and building harmonious social relationships within Indonesia’s diverse society.
