Abstract

This study examines the socio-cultural divergent perspectives between the Syech and Baalawi communities in the Embong Arab area of Malang City through a case study approach. The shifting discourse regarding religious authority and lineage validity at the national level has indirectly influenced the local interaction landscape within the Arab ethnic community at the grassroots level. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method, this research focuses on how these ideological differences and social stratifications manifest in daily socio-cultural practices within the public sphere. Field data were gathered through participant observation and in-depth interviews with key informants from both groups along the Street Syarif Al-Qodri in Malang. The findings reveal a sharp polarization of perspectives regarding the concepts of social egalitarianism, the legitimacy of lineage-based religious authority, and the relevance of exclusive cultural traditions. Despite these distinct cultural divisions in the private domain, the community in Embong Arab Malang demonstrates social maturity by engaging in pragmatic compromises within the public space to maintain communal harmony and economic stability. In conclusion, the divergent perspectives in Embong Arab Malang serve a dual function: as a mirror reflecting the fragmentation of social identity and as an adaptive instrument to suppress open horizontal conflicts among groups through functional tolerance and shared economic interests.
