Socioeconomic Stratification in Educational Settings and Its Impact on Peer Selection

This study examines the phenomenon of socio-economic stratification in educational environments and its influence on peer selection. Educational settings are not only spaces for academic learning but also social interaction arenas where differences in economic background among individuals become visible. These differences often shape social patterns that tend to cluster based on similar socio-economic status. The aim of this study is to analyze how economic conditions influence social relationships and the process of peer selection among students. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using data collection techniques such as observation and simple interviews with several individuals in the educational environment. The findings indicate that economic factors influence the formation of peer groups, particularly in aspects of lifestyle, consumption patterns, and social activities. Individuals with relatively similar economic backgrounds tend to form closer social relationships more easily. However, economic status is not the sole determinant, as personality, values, and environmental factors also play significant roles in shaping friendships. Therefore, socio-economic stratification remains a real phenomenon in educational environments, although it is not always the absolute factor determining social interaction among students.
