Abstract

In linguistics, pragmatic studies study the meaning of speech based on the speaker's external context. Although there is a norm of decency to preserve the feelings of one's partner, the phenomenon of using animal names as swear words due to the influence of friendly environment is now rampant. The negative effects of social media and the peer-environmental influence that normalizes swear words in informal communication, are key drivers for individuals to adopt those language styles into everyday speech practices, thus eroding the boundaries between linguistic modesty and informal communication space. Also, making them lose their emotional sensitivity to the bad effects of swear words and subconsciously integrate it as a reasonable form of expression. This phenomenon triggers a shift in meaning, where the word which denotatively refers to fauna is now pejorating into an irritant. In effect, ambiguity and doubt arise when the word is spoken in its true sense. This study examines a semantic-pragmatic analysis of the shift in meaning of curse words with animal names and also a traditional profession. In language practice, the intonation of the speaker will influence the meaning that will be understood by the speaking partner. In various cultures, the use of swear words is acceptable in certain spheres, but it can be considered rude or offensive in other contexts. Hence, awareness of social and cultural norms in communicating becomes an important aspect to look for. Further research is needed to understand how this shift affects social interaction and whether there are efforts to restore language sobriety among young people. In addition, language education that emphasizes communication ethics can be a solution to reduce the negative impact of this phenomenon.
