Abstract

This study examines the mandatory residence policy in Ma’had from students’ perspectives as an effort to develop character while also identifying the social impacts experienced by students during the program. The implementation of the Ma’had system in Islamic universities is intended to instill religious values, improve discipline, and support students’ academic and social development. However, the policy has also generated various responses, particularly regarding restrictions on personal freedom, pressure from regulations, and difficulties in adapting to the Ma’had environment. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving students participating in the mandatory Ma’had residence program. The findings reveal that the policy contributes positively to character development, discipline enhancement, and the strengthening of students’ Islamic values. Nevertheless, some students experience social and psychological pressure due to strict regulations, limited privacy, and the demands of adapting to the culture of Ma’had life. Therefore, policy evaluation and a more adaptive approach are necessary to ensure that character-building objectives can still be achieved without excessively affecting students’ comfort and personal freedom.
