Abstract

Ushul fiqh is a discipline that discusses the principles and methods used to derive Islamic law from the sources of sharia. This science plays an important role as a methodological foundation in the process of legal istinbath so that the determination of Islamic law can be carried out systematically and responsibly. This study aims to examine the history and development of ushul fiqh, its objects of study, as well as its purposes and benefits in Islamic legal life. The method used in this research is a literature study by reviewing various references related to ushul fiqh. The results show that the origins of ushul fiqh existed since the time of Prophet Muhammad SAW and continued to develop during the periods of the companions, tabi'in, and the imam of madhhabs. The systematic codification of ushul fiqh was pioneered by Imam al-Shafi’i through his work Al-Risalah. Further developments gave rise to various schools of thought, such as the mutakallimin and fuqaha schools. The objects of study in ushul fiqh include sharia evidences, sources of Islamic law, sharia law, and methods of legal istinbath. Thus, ushul fiqh functions as an important guideline in understanding, establishing, and developing Islamic law in accordance with the development of the times.
