Abstract

Indonesian plays an important role as a national identity and a unifying tool for the Indonesian people amidst the diversity of ethnicities, cultures, races, religions, and regional languages. The development of globalization and digitalization has significantly influenced the use and understanding of the Indonesian language in society. This study aims to analyze the role of Indonesian as a national identity in the digital era and the challenges faced in maintaining its existence. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method with a literature study approach through various relevant journals and scientific sources.

The results of the study indicate that Indonesian not only functions as a means of communication, but also as a symbol of national identity, a medium for uniting society, and a tool for preserving cultural values. However, the development of the digital era also presents several challenges, such as the spread of hoax information, the excessive use of informal language and abbreviations, the decline in reading interest, and the increasing influence of foreign languages in daily communication. Therefore, efforts to preserve the Indonesian language are needed through the habituation of proper and correct language use, improvement of digital literacy, and the cultivation of pride in using Indonesian in everyday life.
