Zakat literacy plays an important role in optimizing zakat management as an Islamic economic instrument in improving social welfare and reducing social inequality in society. This study aims to determine the level of zakat literacy and students’ perceptions of zakat in universities in Malang City. This research used a qualitative method with a survey approach through questionnaires distributed to 30 student respondents from various universities and supported by relevant literature. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by classifying and interpreting respondents’ answers. The results showed that students’ zakat literacy was in a fairly good category, especially in basic understanding of zakat and its social function. However, students’ understanding was still conceptual and not yet comprehensive in technical aspects and the implementation of zakat in daily life. In addition, students showed a high interest in learning more about zakat, although they were still constrained by limited education and socialization. Digital media was also considered to have great potential in improving zakat literacy among students. Therefore, strengthening education, socialization, and the use of digital media are necessary to improve students’ zakat literacy.
