Abstract

The increasing population in urban areas has triggered a surge in household waste, especially organic waste, which has the potential to cause massive pollution, unpleasant odors, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. This article comprehensively discusses the utilization of organic waste into eco-enzymes as a sustainable and decentralized solution to reduce urban waste. Eco-enzymes are multipurpose liquids produced from the anaerobic fermentation process of organic waste (fruit peels and vegetable waste), carbohydrate sources, and water in a ratio of 3:1:10 for 90 days. Production at the household level has been proven to significantly reduce the volume of waste generated to the Final Disposal Site (TPA) while providing substantial ecological and economic benefits. Biochemically, this fermentation produces organic acids and complex enzymes (protease, amylase, lipase) that are highly applicable in environmental engineering. This liquid functions as a natural liquid organic fertilizer, antimicrobial cleaner, and water purification agent that effectively reduces the BOD and COD levels of domestic waste. This article also explores the reaction kinetics and organoleptic quality parameters. In conclusion, widespread education, behavioral shifts, and empowerment of environmentally conscious communities are crucial to maximizing the socio-economic impact of eco-enzymes as a key pillar of a circular and waste-free economy.
