Abstract

The increasing energy consumption of the building sector in developing countries has placed sustainable architecture on the agenda, particularly in tropical climates like Indonesia. Residential buildings, as the dominant building typology, significantly contribute to energy use and the comfort of the built environment. This article aims to analyze the application of sustainable architectural principles to residential buildings in Indonesia's tropical climate by integrating theoretical studies and empirical case studies. The research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach through a review of current literature and observational analysis of residential buildings in urban areas in Indonesia. The principles analyzed include building orientation, natural ventilation, natural lighting, the use of local materials, and energy efficiency. The study results indicate that the consistent application of sustainable architectural principles can improve thermal comfort and reduce dependence on artificial energy, although implementation still faces challenges such as limited design understanding and economic pressures. This article emphasizes that sustainable architecture is not merely a technical approach, but rather an adaptive strategy that is ecologically, socially, and economically relevant for residential development in tropical climates.
