Abstract

Leadership of the kyai is a central element in the dynamics and transformation of Islamic education in Islamic boarding schools. The position of the kyai not only functions as a spiritual figure and teacher of religious sciences, but also as a managerial actor who influences policy direction, organizational culture, and the quality of the educational process in the Islamic boarding school environment. This study aims to analyze the forms of kyai leadership and its contribution to changes in the pesantren education system, both in ideological, managerial, and cultural aspects. Based on a literature review and conceptual analysis of the structure leadership in Islamic boarding schools, kyai leadership exhibits religio-paternalistic, charismatic, and authoritative characteristics, which have historically shaped the management patterns of Islamic boarding schools. This finding aligns with Muslichan Noor's research, which states that kyai possess internal and external social networks and play multidimensional roles as scholarly, spiritual, community, and administrative leaders. Kyai leadership has proven to be a major factor in maintaining the sustainability of pesantren traditions, while facilitating the modernization process through curriculum adaptation, institutional management, and improving the quality of education. Thus, kyai have a strategic position as agents of Islamic educational transformation who not only serve to preserve traditional values, but also encourage innovation to respond to the challenges of the times.
