Abstract

Sustainable architecture has become a pressing global issue in addressing the environmental crisis and climate change. The Malang region possesses a wealth of vernacular architecture that utilizes local materials such as bamboo, wood, andesite stone, and clay, which are proven to be environmentally friendly and adaptive to tropical climates. This article aims to examine the characteristics and benefits of utilizing vernacular materials in supporting sustainable architecture in the Malang region. The approach used is a qualitative descriptive literature review that combines analysis of traditional East Javanese architecture, particularly the traditional Javanese house (joglo) and Osing architecture, with contemporary architectural needs. The results show that vernacular materials have advantages including low carbon footprint, abundant local availability, high recyclability, and strong local cultural values and identity. However, challenges include public perception of traditional materials as less modern and the need for processing technology development. In conclusion, integrating vernacular materials with modern construction technology can create sustainable architecture that respects the environment and cultural identity. This article recommends strengthening policies and education to encourage the wider utilization of vernacular materials.
