Modernisasi pesantren dan tantangan mempertahankan nilai-nilai tradisional

Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, are Islamic educational institutions with strong traditions that serve as foundations for institutional identity and students’ character formation. Social and technological developments have encouraged pesantren to adapt through formal education, technology utilization, and the development of students’ competencies. This study aims to examine the position of tradition as the foundation of pesantren, the forms of change that occur, and the challenges and opportunities emerging from the adaptation process toward modernization. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature review of relevant studies on tradition, modernization, and pesantren adaptation. The findings indicate that tradition continues to play an important role in maintaining pesantren identity, while modernization has encouraged changes in educational systems, learning patterns, communication, and students’ skill development. Adaptation presents challenges, particularly the potential erosion of pesantren values and identity, while also providing opportunities to strengthen students’ competencies and expand the social role of pesantren. Selective adaptation is therefore essential to maintain the relevance of pesantren without losing their distinctive identity.
