Microcontroller technology has become integral in various electronic applications due to its ability to integrate processing units, memory, and peripherals on a single chip. Recent research focuses on addressing the growing complexity and efficiency demands in electronic systems, particularly in areas like the Internet of Things (IoT), automated control, and medical devices. This paper provides an overview of microcontroller technology, including its definition, functionality, and types such as AVR, PIC, MCS 51, and ARM microcontrollers. Each type's strengths, weaknesses, and recent research applications are discussed. Despite the popularity of ARM microcontrollers, other types like AVR, PIC, and MCS 51 still find use in diverse applications. The choice of microcontroller depends on factors such as project requirements, resource availability, and cost considerations. Overall, microcontroller technology continues to evolve to meet the demands of modern electronic systems.
