Abstract

Blue Carbon is a term that refers to carbon that is absorbed and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems. This carbon is stored in the form of sediment, such as that found in mangrove trees, tidal swamp bushes and seagrass beds. This carbon is stored in the soil and found in plants in the ecosystem and is stored for hundreds to millions of years. Mangroves are coastal ecosystems that grow in tidal areas which can absorb and store carbon in the soil as well as in the form of living and dead biomass.  Seagrass beds have a vital role in climate change. Seagrass beds can function as natural protection from storms and rising sea levels, prevent coastal erosion, and provide habitat for various marine species, including those with commercial value and those that are threatened with extinction.  It is clear that blue carbon, which is much more effective in absorbing carbon compared to terrestrial ecosystems, needs to be utilized, restored and conserved more effectively.
