Abstract

During a medical examination, communication is an important element in improving the accuracy of the diagnosis. Effective communication is a basic component for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings. Obstructed access to communication can be detrimental to the therapeutic relationship between the professional and the patient, for example, when the patient has a hearing impairment. Language differences between hearing-impaired individuals and professionals can create a significant communication gap. The resulting lack of access to competent mental health services is one of the biggest barriers to deaf patients getting the care they need. Considering the plight of the hearing impaired in accessing professional health services, the authors recommend sign language as a bridge between professionals and patients to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and effectiveness of therapy. This research aims to discuss the role of sign language in clinical psychology for deaf patients using a literature review that is looking for articles related to the importance of sign language in the world of health, especially clinical psychology, that have been published in the range of 2015–2024. The results of this study show the importance of sign language in clinical psychology for deaf patients and highlight the role of psychologists in increasing access to health services that are competent in sign language. This research also seeks to intensify the use of sign language among health professionals and volunteers to facilitate communication during medical examinations.
