Abstract
The orientation of this article explains the history, figures and periodization of the development of hadith. So the writing of hadith has existed since the time of the Prophet. At that time, the companions recorded what the Prophet explained, but in ancient times there were still few companions who could write hadith. Research aims to explain the periodization of hadith from time to time so that they are arranged systematically. This research method uses quantitative research which is descriptive-analytic in nature and also looks at the development of hadith. The results of the research show that hadith is the second source after the Qur'an, which carries the teachings of the Messenger of Allah written down, including his behavior, actions and words, which can later be recorded as hadith and can be a guide for Muslims, who go through many stages. - stages up to now, and also discusses who the figures were who played a role in narrating the hadith and how the periodization or development was carried out until the hadith was recorded or perfect.
