Abstract

Islamic movements in Indonesia are increasingly diverse with local and transnational movements such as Hizb al-Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) and Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI). This article focuses on the history, ideology and development of both movements. The history of HTI describes the formation and evolution of the ideology promoted by the organization. HTI's ideological construction includes an attempt to implement Islamic shari'a comprehensively in Indonesia. On the other hand, MMI also has a unique history and ideology, focusing on jihad and the establishment of an ideal Islamic society. This article also reviews the organizational network and development of HTI's wings and MMI's struggle pattern and organizational structure. A thorough analysis of these movements provides insight into the increasingly complex political and social dynamics of Islam in Indonesia.
