Akulturasi budaya Jawa dan Islam
Transformasi Pancamakara Menjadi Tradisi Selametan
Abstract
This article discusses the process of acculturation and cultural transformation between Javanese and Islamic cultures, focusing on the transformation of the Pancamakara tradition into the Selametan tradition. Acculturation is a process where two cultures interact and maintain their respective identities, while cultural transformation involves significant changes in cultural practices. The arrival of Islam in Java, brought by the Walisongo, particularly Sunan Bonang and Sunan Kalijaga, played a crucial role in integrating local cultural elements with Islamic teachings. The Pancamakara tradition, originally a traditional Javanese calendar system, was adapted into the Selametan ceremony, reflecting a blend of Javanese animism-dynamism beliefs with Islamic teachings on gratitude and communal prayers. The inclusive and adaptive approach used by the Walisongo allowed Islam to be well-received by the Javanese people without sacrificing their cultural identity. This article employs a literature review method to examine relevant literature and provide a deep understanding of the dynamics of this intercultural interaction.
