Dampak kosmetik berbahan merkuri Terhadap kesehatan kulit
Abstract
The use of mercury in cosmetics remains a global concern, particularly in illegal skin-whitening products. Mercury-containing cosmetics are widely sought after for their quick whitening effects, but their health impacts are hazardous. Short-term exposure can cause irritation, allergic reactions, uneven skin tone, and premature aging. Meanwhile, long-term exposure risks permanent hyperpigmentation, skin cancer, and damage to the nervous, kidney, and immune systems. Furthermore, mercury accumulation in the body can trigger chronic poisoning, leading to severe neurotoxic and systemic disorders. This article employs a literature study approach to examine the health impacts of mercury use in cosmetics and the effectiveness of regulations governing their circulation. Additionally, it analyzes the level of government surveillance in controlling illegal mercury-containing cosmetics. Proposed solutions include strengthening regulations on cosmetic imports and distribution, enforcing laws against illegal manufacturers, and educating the public to be more selective in choosing beauty products. Moreover, developing safer skin-whitening ingredients, such as niacinamide, vitamin C, and plant extracts, should be encouraged as a long-term solution. In conclusion, mercury in cosmetics has significant negative impacts on health. Therefore, cooperation among governments, communities, and the cosmetics industry is necessary to ensure the use of safe ingredients for the health and well-being of society as a whole.
