Emil Heradi's Kupu-Kupu Kertas presents a tragic story set against the historical events of Banyuwangi 1965, a time when the ideological conflict between Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) divided society. The story centers on the love affair between Ihsan, a young man from an NU family, and Ning, a girl from a PKI sympathizer family, who must face a major dilemma in the midst of political tragedy and mass violence. Through their love journey, the film highlights the destructive impact of ideological conflict on personal relationships and community life, while reflecting on Indonesia's dark history from a humane perspective. With strong characterization, detailed socio-cultural representation, and emotional narrative, Kupu-Kupu Kertas is not only a romantic drama, but also a socio-political critique that reminds the importance of tolerance and humanity to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
