This study aims to analyze phonological errors made by basic-level students (mahasantri asasi) of Ma’had UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang in reciting Surah Al-Fatihah. The background of this research lies in the importance of mastering tajwid rules and the correct articulation of Arabic letters, particularly in Surah Al-Fatihah which is the core recitation in daily prayers. This research employed a qualitative approach through direct observation during the shobahul qur’an activity. The results show that the most frequent phonological errors include the substitution of the letters ص with س, ع with ء, ح with ه, and ض with ظ. These errors are generally caused by the lack of understanding of tajwid rules, insufficient guidance from teachers, and difficulties in articulating letters according to their proper makhraj. Improvement efforts can be made through a deeper understanding of tajwid, consistent practice focusing on articulation and vowel length, and increased correction by teachers and peers. This study contributes to the development of Qur’anic learning strategies in Islamic higher education, although it is limited only to the analysis of phonological errors in Surah Al-Fatihah.
