Morality in the Practice of Amar Ma’ruf Nahi Munkar
Creating Social Justice in a Tolerant Society
Abstract
This article explores the role of morality in the practice of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar as an instrument for achieving social justice in a pluralistic and tolerant society. Using a qualitative method through literature review and critical analysis of key works, including those by Hamka and contemporary studies on religious freedom and pluralism, the study argues that amar ma’ruf nahi munkar is not only a moral command but also a structural mechanism to reform society and uphold universal values of justice. The morality underlying this principle includes justice, compassion, and respect for human rights. Its application must avoid coercion and discrimination, and instead use a wise and pluralism-respecting approach in line with Islamic teachings and the constitution. Islam offers a comprehensive social justice system through zakat, almsgiving, taxation, and the protection of minority rights. In plural societies, the practice often faces challenges, as it may be seen as conflicting with religious freedom, especially amid the rise of pluralism, secularism, and liberalism. Therefore, strategies such as character education, interfaith dialogue, and legal reform are necessary. Morality in amar ma’ruf nahi munkar is key to building inclusive, tolerant justice and positions Islam as a solution to modern humanitarian challenges.
