Fenomena overthinking pada mahasiswa baru dan faktor penyebabnya
Abstract
Overthinking is a common psychological issue experienced by first-year university students, especially during their transition from high school to the academic and social demands of higher education. This transitional phase often triggers repetitive and unproductive thoughts as students face new academic expectations, social adjustments, and personal responsibilities. This study aims to analyze the internal and external factors that contribute to overthinking among first-year students, as well as its psychological, academic, and social impacts. A literature review approach was employed by examining relevant national and international studies on academic stress, rumination, perfectionism, and student adjustment. The findings indicate that internal factors such as low self-esteem, perfectionism, neuroticism, and past experiences significantly increase the likelihood of overthinking. External factors, including academic pressure, competitive campus environments, family expectations, and social media exposure, further exacerbate this tendency. Overthinking has been shown to cause heightened anxiety, sleep disturbances, academic procrastination, decreased motivation, and difficulties in social interaction. This study highlights the importance of campus initiatives—such as counseling services, academic mentoring, and orientation programs—in supporting students to develop more adaptive coping strategies.
