Getting to Know Yourself
Why is self-awareness important for mental health?
Keywords:
Self-awareness, mental health, emotion regulation, self-reflection, psychological well-beingAbstract
This article examines the role of self-awareness in mental health through a conceptual analysis based on literature review. Mental health is understood as the capacity to face life stressors, maintain adequate relationships, and still experience life as meaningful. Within this framework, self-awareness is positioned as the capacity to notice and reflect on thoughts, emotions, values, and behaviour. The discussion clarifies the conceptual distinction between mental health and self-awareness, then outlines four main dimensions of self-awareness, namely the cognitive, emotional, value and life purpose, and behavioural and social dimensions. The analysis indicates that self-awareness, when accompanied by self acceptance, supports emotion regulation, decision making about personal limits and help seeking, and a healthier meaning making process of difficult experiences. At the same time, excessive self focus without compassion can trigger rumination and harsh self judgment. The article offers a conceptual framework that may inform psychoeducation and future research in the Indonesian context.
