Abstract

This article explains the origins of Islamic boarding schools, which stemmed from the community's perception of individual knowledge, leading scholars from various regions to gather and form learning communities based on simple lodgings.  The evolution of Islamic boarding schools from the traditional to the modern era is also discussed, including their adaptation to the colonial era, independence, and reform, where Islamic boarding schools integrated general education, vocational education, and technology without sacrificing classical Islamic texts. In addition, Islamic boarding schools have become the main focus of social and communal activities such as da'wah, akhlak, and local economic development through independence, mutual cooperation, and religious moderation.  This study uses a qualitative descriptive methodology, utilizing primary sources such as Islamic texts from the archipelago and classical literature on Islamic boarding school customs, as well as secondary sources such as journals and contemporary literature. The findings of the study show that Islamic boarding schools not only serve as examples of the application of Islamic law, but also make a significant contribution to the formation of national character through the study of sincerity, simplicity, and water quality.  Currently, Islamic boarding schools continue to develop into strategic organizations that are relevant in facing the challenges of globalization, with a large number of Islamic boarding schools in Java and outside Java supporting national figures, scholars, and the general public.
