Penggunaan Indikator Alami Sebagai Media Pembelajaran Kimia di Sekolah
Abstract
This study discusses the use of natural indicators as an alternative option in teaching Chemistry in schools, particularly for the topic of acids and bases. The reason behind this research is the limited access to synthetic indicators and also the lack of laboratory facilities in various educational institutions, which results in experimental practices that are not optimal in reinforcing the concept of pH. Through a literature review, the steps for making natural indicators are explained, which usually include material selection, pigment extraction, and filtration processes. Various sources indicate that materials such as hibiscus, purple cabbage, turmeric, guava leaves, and roselle have pigments that can change color in acidic or basic conditions, making them relevant as visual tools for understanding the characteristics of solutions. The literature also shows that the use of natural indicators can support active and contextual learning methods because they use readily available materials. Overall, this study highlights that natural indicators are a practical, budget-friendly, environmentally friendly teaching tool, and suitable for schools with limited facilities, thus strengthening students' understanding of the basic concepts of acids and bases.
